Livermore CA started back in the 1800’s. The interest for this city begun to rise since 1869, when William Mendenhall, the city’s founder helped with the opening of the railroad. This had enormous impact on the economy here, transforming this city in an agricultural center mainly in the wine industry. Thus, Livermore is one of the oldest wine growing regions in California.
The city drastically changed its look after the opening of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in 1952 and with Sandia National Laboratory in 1956. The surplus naval base was the much needed space for this to happen since this the city’s population jumped from 4,000 to 40,000 in the 70’s and today it is around 85,000.
The microclimate here is made for vineyards. People are growing varietals like Sauvingnon Blanc, Semillion and Cabernet grapes. Most famous vineyards are Wente Vineyards and Concannon Vineyards and they have been here for
quite some time, since 1849. The South plain that was added to the city in ’93 has staggering 14,000 acres of viticulture.
In 1992 Livermore adopted an economic development program which focused on developing the industry and commerce here. Thus, Livermore has shown increased activity usually towards WalMart, Costo, Mervyn’s and Ross. Even the downtown Livermore was transformed into the most active shopping district. But the downtown is also one of the best entertainment areas in the Tri-Valley area you can also find a movie theatre, a performing arts center, restaurants, retail and office developments
The schools in Livermore are ranking quite high and are improving constantly. There are many that are being built especially in the north of the city.
Livermore National Lab development are responsible for the affordable housing in Livermore. Although there are many older places here in modest neighborhoods, since 1990’s the north side of Livermore is constantly built with new affordable housing in unique neighborhoods with parks and schools. The south Livermore developments are luxurious
and mixed with vineyards and that creates a unique wine country experience
The Livermore community has many events like the Livermore Pro Rodeo, Harvest Wine Festival, Days of Wine and Honey, Old-fashioned Fourth of July Celebration with fireworks, and Fitness Day that are filled with fun and excitement.
The weather is just perfect here. It is warmer and dryer from other cities in Alameda Country but is not as hot as the central valley thanks to the Diablo Range. The air knows to get a little smoggy when winds blow the smog from the Bay Area but the quality is improving. Summers are hot with temperatures reaching around the 90’s but winters are cooler. . Livermore is a perfect blend of rolling hills, scenic vineyards, a quaint downtown and a generous mix of price ranges and neighborhoods styles.
